About the Artists:
Ustad Akmal Qadri spent his early years in vocal training and learning the basics of Sangeet from his father, Saeen Ditta Qadri. His father was a famous Bansuri Nawaz of Pakistan, having played for the film industry and being a regular feature for solo bansuri on Radio Pakistan, he was also a recipient of the President’s Pride of Performance Award. Akmal sahib began his training on the bansuri with his father at the age of 12. Over the years, in addition to his own father’s distinctive style and repertoire, Akmal sahib was heavily influenced by baaj of the bansuri virtuoso from India, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia. Once his career saw him travelling internationally for performances in music festivals and programs in Singapore, India, UK and USA, Akmal sahib was fortunate enough to meet with Pt. Chaurasia during his India tours with the Rafi Pir Theatre Group and managed to further incorporate newer ideas into his own repertoire. Ustad Akmal Qadri has performed widely across Pakistan and in many countries abroad, has made several appearances on Pakistan Television and is one of the few maestros of bansuri in Pakistan.
Yousuf Kerai hails from Karachi, Pakistan and was introduced to South Asian Music at the age of eight where he learned to sing, and play the harmonium, under the tutelage of the late Master Babu Khan. Through this, his interest in the tabla grew into an obsession. At the age of sixteen, he was accepted as a student of the great maestro, Ustad Khursheed Hussain. Yousuf has been a student of tabla for the last 25 years, even though he has spent eight of those years in the U.S.A. for the sake of higher education. Earning a B.A. in Mathematics and a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics from Bennington College, Yousuf has taught at various institutions in USA and Pakistan in the capacity of a mathematics teacher and teacher trainer. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and Music, and is the Founding Director of the Centre for South Asian Music at Habib University.
