Qawwal Subhan Ahmed Nizamiis a descendant of the prestigious “Qawwaal Bachon Ka Gharana” of Delhi. His ensemble belong to the oldest music school founded in the subcontinent by Hazrat Amir Khusro in 1276. The teachings that remained intact were handed down from father to son without interruption. Subhan Ahmed Nizami is the 33rd descendant in direct line of Amir Khusro’s first student: Mian Samaath, the only one with descendants. His ancestors were the official musicians attached to the court of kings and emperors until 1857, date of the abdication of the last emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Celebrated not just in Pakistan but also in France and beyond, Qawwal Subhan Ahmed Nizami and his ensemble are indeed a living legend.
Subhan Ahmed Nizami’s great grandfather was one of the official musicians of the Mughal court while. Meanwhile, his grandfather’s Radio Pakistan concerts were highly sought after performances that people would go out of their way to attend. His son, Ustad Afaq Ahmed Nizami was the family librarian, a specialist of Farsi kalaam, and an exemplary practitioner of classical music.
After his father’s passing in 1999, Subhan Ahmed Nizami, barely 18, formed his own qavvaali group to continue the legacy of his forefathers. In addition to performing in Pakistan, Subhan and his brothers have given several extremely well received concerts in France.
