Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of the art form, focusing on pure Kathak basics, posture and movement technique. Participants will also learn about choreography technicalities and will be encouraged to enhance their movement vocabulary. Participants will be taught a short choreographed piece on a suitable composition of collective choice (ghazal or thumri), allowing them to experience the expressional and emotive aspect of storytelling involving abhinaya and anga.

Participants will explore the evolution and timeline of Kathak, understanding the depth and traditional roots of the art form as well as experience it’s contemporary touch. They will experience the role music plays in allowing the dancer to create a certain atmosphere and embark on their storytelling journey.

There will be an emphasis on the understanding of Taal and musical structure. We will focus on Teen Taal (a cycle of 16 beats) and discuss theory aspects pertaining to this specific Taal.
